Tim Hetherington

British
The Other War
Shot in Afghanistan, October 2007
Commissioned and broadcast by ABC Nightline

WINNER: Rory Peck Award for Features 2008

Tim’s film is an eyewitness account of the daily physical and emotional struggles of American soldiers from the Second Platoon of the 173rd Airborne fighting in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan.

It includes rare recordings of US bombing of civilian areas and attempts by the soldiers to make peace with village elders in Taliban-controlled areas.

Tim was on the frontline with the soldiers when they came under attack in a Taliban ambush during "Operation Rock Avalanche". The attack resulted in the death of three soldiers.

The judges described The Other War as "extraordinary". One said: "I haven’t seen US soldiers portrayed so clearly as vulnerable human beings. The piece completely changes your view of them."
