Clifford Derrick
Kenyan
Kibera Slum
Shot in Kenya, January 2008
Commissioned and broadcast by Al Jazeera English
FINALIST: Rory Peck Award for News 2008
Clifford’s piece takes the viewer into Kenya's notorious Kibera Slum at the height of the post-election chaos and shows how its impoverished residents bore the brunt of the violence.
Clifford was the first cameraman to go into the slums. He witnessed a contingent of anti-riot police firing live rounds into the crowd and tear gas into houses where terrified women and children tried to shelter.
The judges said the film was full of striking images. One said: "this entry is a product of real initiative and access. The resulting rawness is extraordinarily revealing. The sense of individual misery and injustice is powerful."
